logoWe regularly assist TV and film production companies with their telephone and internet requirements when they are using production facilities at a temporary location. Typically they would be at the location for 3 or 4 months.

The challenge is to minimise telecommunications costs when minimum contracts for services are for 12 months.

Solution

Our typical solution is based on providing a minimum of two phone line at the site. On one of the lines we would attach the best possible ADSL internet connection. The other line would be the main phone number for the site with the internet phone line being used as the site fax number.

The phone lines and the internet connection would have to be on the 12 month minimum contracts.

The internet connection would be used for between 2 and 4 VoIP phone lines set up with our preferred SIP provider. The number of VoIP lines would depend on the quality of the internet connection.

The advantage of using VoIP lines is that there is no minimum contract. They are also very cost effective in other areas with a monthly rental cost of about £5 (instead of £15) and comparatively low call costs.

We would then need to come to a judgement on the number of additional non-VoIP lines that would be required at the site. This would be based on the number of people at the site and various other factors such as the policy on the use of personal mobiles for business calls.

Our judgement may be that we have to order a few more standard analogue or ISDN lines to provide the required service.

Typically the standard lines and the VoIP lines would be connected to a site phone system and the internet connection would be distributed throughout the site using an on-site data network that we would install.

We would advise the customer that the call quality on the VoIP lines may not be as good as that on regular phone lines, but this has to be offset against the cost savings in terms of the saving of £100 connection charge per line and the need to fulfill a 12 month contract at £15 per month per line.

[NB VoIP lines suffer from quality issues mainly when they are provided over ADSL connections. If they are provided over synchronous uncontended internet connections then quality of VoIP calls would approach that of calls over analogue or ISDN lines.]

There are other solutions that we have implemented for TV and film production companies using Mobile Phone Gateways with multiple sim cards to provide phone lines when there is no standard internet connection. In such cases we have also used the mobile network 3G service to provide an internet service.

We have not come across a situation with no internet connection or no mobile service, but if we do then we would have to consider satellite based solutions or, if possible, radio links to the nearest place where there is an internet connection.
