What type of phone do I need for fibre-to-the-home broadband?

Over the next few years there will be a widespread migration to Fibre-to-the-Home (or Fibre-to-the-Premises) broadband connections. At the same time the traditional phone network that is based on copper cabling will be phased out.

This means that end-users who want to continue to have a home phone will either need new phones or an adaptor to enable connection of their existing phones.

Some end-users will be happy to dispense with a home phone altogether and rely on their mobile phone, but many will still want to continue to have a fixed home phone with their existing landline number.

In this article we consider the options for having a home phone that can be used on Fibre-to-the-Home broadband services.

Fibre-to-the-Home Broadband

Fibre-to-the-Home broadband delivers ultra-fast speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps over an extremely reliable connection that does not depend on on decades-old copper cabling. This means that the traditional copper-based phone lines can be ceased.

A Fibre-to-the-Home broadband connection is terminated by Openreach (in the home) with a modem to which the end-user router is connected. The router would usually be supplied by the broadband service provider.

Although the current Openreach Fibre-to-the-Home broadband modem incorporates telephone ports, these are not usually active and will disappear completely from the next generation of Openreach fibre modems. This means that a home phone service has to be provided via the end-user router.

Most broadband service providers will offer a chargeable home phone service, but the end-user is free to choose a home phone service from a different provider.

Premitel Home Phone Service – Free Trial

Premitel can provide both Fibre-to-the-Home broadband and also a broadband phone service either as a package or separately. The Premitel home phone service costs £3.00 (inc vat) per month and includes calls to UK landline and mobiles.

There is a free trial of the Premitel home phone service for one month included with all broadband phone products, including those discussed below.

The process of transferring an existing number to the Premitel phone service can take place after the free-trial. Alternatively, the end-user can choose to have a new number. There is no charge either for transferring a number or supplying a new number.

Broadband Phone Service – Using Existing Phones

Unless the end-user is in a new-build property then there is the distinct possibility that there are a number of existing phones plugged into extension sockets throughout the home. These extension sockets would be wired back to the phone line master socket.

If the end-user wants to keep their existing sockets and phones then it is necessary to disconnect the phone line from the master socket and connect the master socket to the router via a device called an Analogue Terminal Adaptor (ATA).

The phone port of the ATA (green socket in photo above) would plug into the master socket and the ethernet port of the ATA (blue socket in phone above) would plug into a spare port on the router.

Premitel offer an ATA together with a kit containing the leads and adaptors that are necessary to connect the ATA to a master socket and to a router. The Premitel ATA and kit are available for £40.00 (inc vat) with free delivery.

The Premitel ATA is pre-configured for the Premitel home phone service and can therefore be used immediately as part of the free-trial discussed above. The ATA can be connected to any broadband phone service.

Broadband Phone Service – Using New Phones

If the end-user wants completely new phones then there are a wide range of broadband phones from which to choose. Broadband phones are often known as VoIP phones. VoIP is an abbreviation for Voice over Internet Protocol.

One of our best selling VoIP phones is the Yealink W53P digital cordless phones. The W53P has HD sound quality and can support up to 8 x handsets. It also has excellent range which can be boosted if necessary by installing repeaters.

The Yealink W53P is very flexible as its handsets are separate from its base. The base would connect to the router and the handset(s) can be located anywhere within the home.

Premitel can supply the Yealink W53P for £85.00 (inc vat) with free delivery. It would be supplied pre-configured for the Premitel home phone service and can therefore be used immediately as part of the free-trial discussed above.

The Yealink W53P can be connected to any broadband phone service.
