VoIP is the abbreviation for Voice over Internet Protocol and is the generic name used for making and receiving telephone calls over IP networks such as:
- the Local Area Network (ie LAN) that connects together the computers, and other devices in your office or home; and
- Wide Area Networks (ie WAN) such as the public internet.
The advantage of VoIP is that it enables telephone and computer data communications to be integrated so that both can be transmitted together within LANs and across WANs using a common network infrastructure.
Previously, telephone calls were transmitted over completely separate analogue and ISDN networks.
VoIP phone systems are very cost effective when compared with legacy phone systems for the following reasons:
- there is no need to purchase and maintain on-site phone-system equipment because computers and telephones can share the same on-site network equipment. All that is required on-site are telephone handsets.
- there is no need to install a separate internal cabling infrastructure to connect the telephone handsets to the VoIP phone system because computers and telephone handsets can share the same internal cabling infrastructure.
- there is no need to rent separate analogue or ISDN telephone lines because computer data communications and telephone calls can share the same internet connection.
In addition, VoIP call charges are very low.
Fit for Purpose
Internet based VoIP phone systems are inherently more flexible than legacy on-site phone system and can be designed and configured to meet the operational needs of any business.
Features can be switched on and off with the click of a mouse and VoIP phone systems can easily be scaled up and down and implemented quickly at any site where there is an internet connection.
There is a popular misconception that VoIP call quality is poor and unreliable.
This may be true for free VoIP services such as Skype that are made over poor quality internet connections that treat VoIP calls in the same way as other internet traffic.
VoIP call quality is at least as good as that available on legacy analogue and ISDN lines as long as the internet connection and local network takes account of the specific demands of VoIP telephone calls.
In particular, your internet connection and local network must take account of the fact that telephone calls demand real-time, two-way communications and must therefore have priority over less demanding applications such as internet browsing and email.
Internet Speed (or Bandwidth)
Another popular misconception is that VoIP requires a high speed internet connection.
This is not true as a single VoIP call requires only 100 Kbps of bandwidth. In fact some VoIP phones and systems included coding software that enables a single high quality VoIP call to be made using less than 35 Kbps of bandwidth
A relatively slow 1 Mbps internet connection could therefore support between 10 and 30 simultaneous VoIP calls.
What is required is a good quality and reliable internet connection from a service provider that gives priority to VoIP data packets on their network and that routes VoIP data packets directly to your chosen VoIP service provider.
